Many universities across the United States offer summer degree and non-degree courses ranging from electives that can be applied towards degree completion to interest courses for lifelong learners.
For example, Berkeley Law offers a summer master’s degree program for international students who complete the degree over two summer periods. Students often take leaves from a career to complete the law degree summer semesters.
University Summer School Features Small Classes
Stanford University offers open enrollment to visiting adults and college students. Most summer students are both undergraduate and graduate students from universities around the world. Classes are small and the student body is diverse.
Summer visitors take eight-week courses in the schools of Humanities and Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Engineering or a 10-week physics sequence. Credit earned are often eligible for transfer to another college or university.
Courses at Stanford’s summer school range from psychology and biology to comparative literature and mathematics.
At Yale University, hundreds of students attend the summer session from around the world. Courses range from those taught during the traditional academic year to film and travel abroad opportunities and physical and applied sciences.
One interesting element of the Yale summer session is offered through the Yale Film Studies Program. Courses in this popular program include Spike Lee, The Hollywood Novel and Hollywood Movie and International Film Noir.
Summer Courses at Universities Offered as Degree, Nondegree Options
Johns Hopkins University draws undergraduate students from around the world into summer courses in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. Classes are small and students can study abroad in Argentina, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
The University of Chicago offers a wide array of degree courses for its students and visiting students. Undergraduate courses include Chicago in Beijing, offered in collaboration with Qinghua University. Students study Chinese during an eight-week language course supplemented with cultural activities such as marital arts, tours and calligraphy.
At Harvard University, a range of opportunities are available for Harvard students, students visiting from other universities, high school students and adult learners. For example, for adults and professionals, students can choose from more than 300 courses in 60 subjects through open enrollment at the undergraduate, graduate and noncredit levels.
Summer degree courses at U.S. universities offer plenty of options. Students can start or continue a degree program, take a personal interest program or courses and enjoy these options with terms ranging from a few weeks long to the entire summer.
