Search the internet and a number of private online and in-person tutors are available for an hourly fee. However, the majority of university students at all levels and in all programs of study have exceptional and free tutoring programs right on campus.
There is little question about the value of tutoring for university students. Post-secondary students sometimes face isolation and find the classroom or seminar experience a challenging learning environment. The benefit of having a face-to-face tutoring session is that students can review complex university course materials and instruction in a setting that most meets individual learning needs.
Some students also seek university tutoring on campus to prepare for entrance exams such as the LSAT to gain admission to a law degree program.
Free Online Tutoring Available at Most Universities
Tutors are often not professional teachers, but are those who enjoy interacting with university students to address specific questions within a range of expertise. Many universities now employ peer tutors, who are upper-year undergraduate or graduate students, to work as tutors in career and academic support centers.
At the University of Toronto, for example, university students can take advantage of free tutoring at University of Toronto Peer Tutoring. The Center recruits qualified tutors to help students one-on-one in a challenging course. Also offers are help sessions for selected courses before midterm exams.
Free Tutoring in Math, Chemistry and KSU
Kansas State University provides tutoring services at its Academic Assistance Center and orientation classes, math skills instruction, tutoring, academic counseling, credit-by-examination, and entrance and professional examinations. At KSU, free tutoring is available in a variety of introductory courses including the most challenging courses students experience such as math and chemistry. In addition, students wanting regular assistance are assigned to small groups that meet weekly with a peer tutor who assists with course content and learning strategies.
The University of Florida provides free tutoring services at its appropriately named center, OASIS, the Office for Academic Support and Institutional Services. Tutors are junior and senior students with an average GPA of 3.5. Like many other university tutoring programs, OASIS provides tutoring on a core group of subjects and offers one-on-one sessions.
The Undergraduate Academic Life unit at Stanford University recommends the following for university students when asked: “when should I use tutoring:”
- Early!
- When you are struggling with a concept.
- When you are trying to assess how deeply you comprehend the material.
- When you feel stuck on problem-solving.
- When you need conversational practice for a foreign language.
Stanford also offers tutoring for oral presentations being prepared by undergraduate students. The Oral Communication Program offers courses, workshops, and appointments by tutors that assist in designing and delivering oral presentations, preparing for job interviews, learning to use PowerPoint effectively and overcoming speech anxiety.
Free, high quality online and face-to-face tutoring is available to most university students studying at the undergraduate and graduate degree. Students should check out the academic support and career centers on campus to find out the options to access these essential supports.
